Parents Are Not Always Right

In some areas of the Philippines where I grew up, young men and women were much more sophisticated and conservative values were practiced by cost individuals. Unlike teenagers who grew up in the United States, the ones in the Philippines were more laid-back and reserved. Despite the fact that I grew up in a place where traditional and conventional values were practiced, influences in society such as the media, still played a role in growing up. Therefore, teenagers did not always stay true to the advice of their parents.Parenting is an intricate subject. Some guardians believe that being a strict parent to their children will allow them to stay on the right path and grow up as responsible adults. However, strict parenting also back-fire which can result in their children wanting to rebel and go against their parent's orders. The advice that my parents gave me of not having a boyfriend until finishing school is an example of this type of parenting. Thankfully, my parents and I still h ad a close relationship after I disobeyed them that one time.They still trusted me since I always gave them a reason to. Unfortunately, I have witnessed dreadful outcomes in my group of friends when their parents strongly applied this rule to their children. In addition, their parents became too overprotective and would intrude in their child's privacy which resulted In their child feeling suffocated and feeling the need to go against their parents orders since their parents acted as If they could not be trusted.After witnessing a friend went through this experience, I learned that If you raise a child to respect certain values and they are aware that you trust them, It can do miracles. This can also benefit their relationship with their children In the future knowing that there was always a strong trust factor between hem. Once trust Is gained, a child will become open and comfortable with their guardians. Eddie Carbone Essay

Eddie Carbone is a complicated character, some say he is a villain due to the actions that he takes, others sympathise with him, saying that he is a victim. You can view him in different lights, although he acts, some may say, in a villainous manner, he is a victim of his feelings, confused and unsure of the right thing to do. Eddie has very strong feelings that he finds very difficult to cope with, this leads the audience to feel sympathy towards him. He loves Catherine and feels very responsible for her well being. He shows this when he say’s â€Å"I promised your mother on her deathbed. Eddie feels he has a sense of duty that he needs to protect her from the outside world. He is at conflict with himself as he feels responsible for Catherine but also knows that he needs to let her go. He is also jealous and disgusted by Rodolfo. When Eddie kisses Rodolfo, he implied that Rodolfo was â€Å"queer†. This was a desperate act to get rid of Rodolfo and therefore keep Catherine close to home. Eddie has mixed feelings about this because he wants Catherine to stay at home but also he wants to keep his name in the community. Eddie also has very strong principles which influence his judgement; this allows the audience to empathise with him. Eddie has strong loyalties and a sense of family with Beatrice and Catherine. He shows that family should stick together when he says to Beatrice â€Å"you will be on my side or theirs, that’s all. † This shows how important he values a close knit family who stick together no matter what. It also shows that to be strong he thinks he needs a family around him to support him and back him up. Eddie has strong values in regard to the importance of community. When he warns Catherine of the Vinnie Bolzano story, it shows that he values the importance of community. That no one can live without their reputation and loyalty of wife and neighbours. This also shows that he is willing to fight to get it back. This portrays how much his emotions have overpowered his values as he goes against the community when he betrays Marco and Rodolfo later in the scene. Eddie takes quite daring actions in the later parts of the play, this causes the audience and other characters to judge him. Eddie is desperate to prove that Rodolfo is not worthy of Catherine. When he kisses Rodolfo it implies that Rodolfo is â€Å"queer†. Catherine is quite disgusted by what Eddie is implying and shocked that he would treat people in that way. The audience is shocked and again disgusted with the lengths that Eddie would go to in order to get what he wants. Eddie was desperate to get rid of Rodolfo when reports him and his brother to the immigration office. Eddies betrayal of Rodolfo and Marco showed his true colours and how he really felt about Catherine. This shocked the audience and made them judge him as disloyal and hypercritical. Making them judge him as a villain. Eddie has very strong feelings of pride which cause him to act in a villainous manner. Eddie finds criticism difficult to deal with and is very aware of people judging him. He refuses Beatrice when she asks â€Å"when will I be a wife again Eddie? † This causes problems in his relationship with Beatrice as he lets his pride get in the way. He never compromises but instead lets his views be coloured by his principles. Eddie has unusual feelings towards Catherine, this makes the audience feel uncomfortable and make them feel that he is acting inappropriately. When he kisses Catherine, he is under the influence of alcohol, this causes the worst elements of his character to emerge. It shows how he is really feeling about her and also that he is hoping for her to feel the same way. In conclusion I think that Eddie Carbone is a victim more than a villain as the way he is feeling makes him act the way that some may describe villainous. He dies a tragic hero as he is just standing up for what he believes in and trying to make what he thinks right, reality.

Social workers must also focus on the forces in a persons environment that are involved in making and contributing to problems in living conditions. Those people who are assisted by social workers are referred to as clients. They can be individuals, groups, families, or communities. Therefore, social workers must be attuned to cultural, racial, and ethnical differences in people. This will help put an end to discrimination, oppression, poverty, and other types of social wrongs. There are six core values on which the social work profession is based. These are service, social justice, dignity, and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. These core values are the fundamental principles that a social worker should use in dealing with clients and helps guide them in treating the clients with dignity and respect. The social workers Code of Ethics are at the core of the profession. These ethics are of great importance to all social work students as well. They help in making sound judgments and decisions when dealing with all segments of the population regardless of the clients religion, race, or ethnicity. The six core values of social work have ethical principles which are the ideals to which each social worker should strive to meet. Service happens when a social worker uses his or her knowledge, values, and skills to help those in need. Social justice is when a social worker attempts social change on behalf of those who cant help themselves. Dignity and worth of the person is showing respect to each client regardless of their social situation. The importance of human relationships is seen by social workers in their efforts to advance, renew, and improve the well-being of families, social groups, and communities. Integrity is behaving at all times in a trusting manner. Competence is basically a social worker knowing his or her job and taking steps to improving their professional expertise. Pertinent Ethics and Values Dealing with Worth and Dignity There are several ethics and values that relate to human diversity and the worth and dignity of persons. Employment of these ethics and values are of great importance to the social worker and the client. They are as follows: 1.02 Self-Determination Social workers respect and promote the right of clients to self-determination and assist clients in their efforts to identify and clarify their goals. Social workers may limit clients right to self-determination when, in the social workers professional judgment, clients actions or potential actions pose a serious, foreseeable, and imminent risk to themselves or others. 1.03 Informed Consent (b) In instances when clients are not literate or have difficulty understanding the primary language used in the practice setting, social workers should take steps to ensure clients comprehension. This may include providing clients with a detailed verbal explanation or arranging for a qualified interpreter or translator whenever possible. (c) In instances when clients lack the capacity to provide informed consent, social workers should protect clients interests by seeking permission form an appropriate third party, informing clients consistent with the clients level of understanding. In such instances social workers should seek to ensure that the third party acts in a manner consistent with clients wishes and interests. Social workers should take reasonable steps to enhance such clients ability to give informed consent. 1.05 Cultural Competence and Social Diversity (a) Social workers should understand culture and its function in human behavior and society, recognizing the strengths that exist in all cultures. (b) Social workers should have a knowledge base of their clients cultures and be able to demonstrate competence in the provision of services that are sensitive to clients cultures and to differences among people and cultural groups. (c) Social workers should obtain education about and seek to understand the nature of social diversity and oppression with respect to race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, political belief, religion, immigration status, and mental or physical disability. 1.07 Privacy and Confidentiality (a) Social workers should respect clients right to privacy. Social workers should not solicit private information form clients unless it is essential to providing services or conducting social work evaluation or research. Once private information is shared, standards of confidentiality apply. (d) Social workers should inform clients, to the extent possible, about the disclosure of confidential information and the potential consequences, when feasible, before the disclosure is made. This applies whether social workers disclose confidential information on the basis of a legal requirement or client consent. (f) When social workers provide counseling services to families, couples, or groups, social workers should seek agreement among the parties involved concerning each individuals right to confidentiality and obligation to preserve the confidentiality of information shared by others. Social workers should inform participants in family, couples, or group counseling that social workers cannot guarantee that all participants will honor such agreements. 1.11 Sexual Harassment Social workers should not sexually harass clients. Sexual harassment includes sexual advances, sexual solicitation, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. 1.12 Derogatory Language Social workers should not use derogatory language in their written or verbal communications to or about clients. Social workers should use accurate and respectful language in all communications to and about clients. 1.14 Clients Who Lack Decision-Making Capacity When social workers act on behalf of clients who lack the capacity to make informed decisions, social workers should take reasonable steps to safeguard the interests and rights of those clients. 2.01 Respect (a) Social workers should treat colleagues with respect and should represent accurately and fairly the qualifications, views, and obligations of colleagues. (b) Social workers should avoid unwarranted negative criticism of colleagues in communications with clients or with other professionals. Unwarranted negative criticism may include demeaning comments that refer to colleagues level of competence or to individuals attributes such as race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, political belief, religion, immigration status, and mental or physical disability. (c) Social workers should cooperate with social work colleagues and with colleagues of other professions when such cooperation serves the well-being of clients 4.02 Discrimination Social workers should not practice, condone, facilitate, or collaborate with any form of discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identify or expression, age, marital status, political belief, religion, immigration status, or mental or physical disability. 4.03 Private Conduct Social workers should not permit their private conduct to interfere with their ability to fulfill their professional responsibilities. 4.04 Dishonesty, Fraud, and Deception Social workers should not participate in, condone, or be associated with dishonesty, fraud, or deception. My Views of the Ethics and Values Dealing with Worth and Dignity Self-determination is a very important value when dealing with a client. This allows the client, with assistance from the social worker, to identify their goals. The client will feel a sense of ownership in reaching said goals. Privacy and confidentiality also play a huge role in preserving the worth and dignity of someone receiving assistance. Everyone, regardless of their status in society, has a right to privacy. Some clients may not know that they have these rights or may believe that their right to privacy has been forfeited since they are receiving assistance. This, of course, is not true, and the social worker should inform the client of this fact. The social worker also has to realize that not all of the people receiving services are literate and must therefore explain to those clients the disclosure of confidential information. This also pertains to each individuals rights to confidentiality when providing counseling to couples or groups. A social worker should never make advances of a sexual nature to a client. This may lead some clients to believe that the only way that they can receive assistance is to give into those advances. It may also cause others to not seek assistance at all. Derogatory language, either verbal or written, can be demoralizing to a client. A social worker has to be aware of the culture of the person that they are addressing. What may not be significant to the social worker may, on the other hand, be offensive to the client. The decision-making process varies from client to client. The social worker must make sure that when he or she is acting of behalf of a client that the clients interests and rights are safe guarded. Respect in the Social Work Code of Ethics is under the ethical responsibilities to colleagues, but it should also be under the way clients should be treated. When one shows respect to another person, communication is greatly enhanced, and communication is what social work revolves around. Discrimination is something that can not and should not be practiced, condoned, or facilitated by a social worker. This means discrimination of any type to include; race, ethnicity, sex, color, marital status, politics, mental disability, immigration status, or sexual orientation. Discrimination has an adverse effect on the client and the social work profession. When a social worker allows their private life to affect their work, no one wins. A social worker must be professional enough to separate the two. Another issue that deals with a social workers professionalism is his or her ability to not take part in any way with deception, dishonesty, or fraud. My Application of the Ethics When dealing with ethnicity, I will learn about what is acceptable and unacceptable with each ethnic group. I will ensure that I differentiate between ethnicity and race. National origin has to be dealt with in a similar way as with ethnicity. Therefore, I will ensure that I am aware of the customs of the clients homeland. Social class requires that a social worker not form preconceived notions of the person being served. I will keep my mind open and ensure, as with all cases, to listen to what is being said. Religion is a very touchy subject that has to be handled. I will make every effort to understand the customs and traditions of various religious groups in order not to offend. When dealing with a client that has a physical or mental disability, I will ensure that their dignity and worth is not compromised. I will use language that they can easily understand, and I will not talk down to the individual. Everyone has the right to live their life they way that they choose. I will never judge a client based on their sexual orientation. This and the previous subjects can be handled by simply being a professional. I will strive to be a consummate professional at all times.

One of the most controversial topics in America today is the death penalty. Four thousands of years the death penalty has been used all over the world. In the earlier centuries the townsmen would hang people if they were accused as being a witch, but they were not witches at all. They merely knew a little more information than the next person. They were wrongly accused, and that is why I see the death penalty as immoral, unethical and just wrong! People were put to death for no reason; they were accused because there wasn't enough evidence to prove their innocence. Here in America you are innocent until proven guilty. That is not the way it is, you are guilty until proven innocent is the right way to look at the society today. In this essay I will show statistics, pros, cons, moral issues, etc about the death penalty. The word "capitol"; in"capital punishment"; refers to a person's head. In the past, people were often executed by severing their head from their body. The United States is one of the very few industrialized countries in the world that executes criminals. It is one of the few countries in the world that executes mentally ill persons, persons with very low IQ, and child murders (i.e. persons who were under 18 at the time of their crime).On August 22, 2000, "Virginia and Texas each executed two men who committed their crimes when they were under 18"(Sara Rimer and Raymond Bonner).Which in my personal opinion is just wrong. As of October 19, 2000, during the last decade of the 20th century, 547 prisoners were executed in the United States --one third of them in Texas. Another 3,500 wait on death rows. When asked whether people prefer to keep or abolish the death penalty, about 60 to 80% of American adults say that they want to keep capital punishment. Numbers vary depending upon the exact wording of the question asked by the pollsters. When asked whether they would like to see executions continue or have them replaced with a system that guaranteed life imprisonments with no hope for parole, ever; that the inmate would work in the prison to earn money; that the money would be directed to helping the family of the person(s) that they killed. Capital punishment has been a cause for debate for many years, and people continue to ... ... the race of the defendant or of the victim in deciding whether to impose the death penalty".(Bonner). From the facts that I stated above i think death penalty is very much racist. In conclusion, the death penalty may seem to be the best course of action but in reality I believe that it is not. As I have said, it is the best deterrent America employs against murder, it saves our country money, and most importantly, it guarantees that a murderer will not have the chance to kill again. Theme of Tradition in The Lottery by Shirley Jackson Essay -- The Lotte

The Lottery by Shirley Jackson Americans day after day live much of their lives following time-honored traditions that are passed down from one generation to another. From simple everyday cooking and raising children, to holidays and other family rituals, tradition plays a significant role on how they go by there everyday lives. In Shirley Jackson's short story, "The Lottery," the citizens of a small farming town follow one such tradition. A point is made regarding human nature in relation to tradition. The story begins on a beautiful summer afternoon. The town's citizens are eager, gathering in the town square in order to take part in the yearly lottery. With the story focused around one particular family, the Hutchinsons, who are so anxious to get it all over with until they find that one of their members is to participate in the lottery's closing festivities, Tessie. Of course unlike your typical lotteries, this is not one that you would want to win. The one chosen from the lottery is to undertake a cr uel and unusual death by stoning at the hands of their fellow townsmen for the sake that it may bring a fruitful crop for the coming harvest season. Ironically, many of the towns people have suggested that the lottery be put to an end, but most find the idea unheard of being that they have lived in it's practice for most of their lives. The story conveys a message that traditions may be valued so highly that those in their practice may do everything they can to ensure that they continue in accordance. From this a question arises. How far would one go to ensure their sacred traditions remain unscathed? For many, change is a cause for ignorance. Most of us fear the idea of change. When one is faced to deal with c... ...ithdraw from the tradition because they do not know any other way. Can you imagine what life would be if there were no Christmas or Thanksgiving? For many cultures, tradition is the basis for their history. One example to this being the Hawaiian culture whose history was destroyed when they were forced to stop their ancient dances which told stories of their past. Adversely, tradition has played negative roles in society as well with the battle between the Muslims and Christians in many middle-eastern countries. Tradition plays many roles in today's society. Our goal should be to grasp the idea of what they really mean. We must not isolate ourselves to what we think we know, but instead allow ourselves to comprehend. Just recently, this past spring my cell phone contract recently expired after a continuous extension of over lapping contracts for over ten years. I have decided to finally upgrade my cell phone. The saturated cellular device industry can meet various consumer needs just depending on how sophisticated of a device is needed. The new and advanced iPhone 5 is a huge investment for a cellular phone. The retail price for iPhone 5 ranges from an additional $199 with a two year contract and $500 compared to the contract price AT&T offers. Purchasing a high costly device means comes with the decisions on whether to purchase the contract price iPhone and not worry about accidental insurance; thus risk purchasing a replacement phone at retail cost or purchase the contract price iPhone and pay an extra 48% insurance fee, which adds to my spending and reallocate my budget for this phone. To decrease my decision of uncertainty; I have complied research on the new iPhone 5. My researched data set was from Business Wire and it provided a survey of 10,000 iPhones including their warranty claims. More important, my researched specified the hardware and accidental warranty claims. The claims all occurred within two years of purchase. Considering a voice plan and data plan would cost at least $1440 over the term of the contract. Another viable option is setting up an agreement with Cricket, which is better known as a pay as you go company. Cricket does offer an unlimited plan that could cost a consumer more than $5,500 over a two year agreement. Based on research from T3 the Gadget Website, the iPhone 5 is 20% daintier than the iPhone 4s, 16% less bulky than the Samsung Galaxy S3 and 14% lighter that the HTC One X. The iPhone 5 reviews have shown that it has a bigger screen, 4G capability and a better front facing cameras. However, the review also shows that the battery life is still not great, there are no iP5-specifice iOS 6 features and the old maps design is highly preferred.
